date, 11 House

date, 11 House

This is a date, 11 House (Matlactlionce Calli in Nahuatl), a layover of the count of time from the pre-Hispanic Nahua calendar. In this context, this year translates into 1529 in the Gregorian calendar, and it was likely the date upon which the warriors were amassed for the expedition to colonize the frontiers of Nueva Galicia. The glyph for calli (house, building) is a frontal elevation rather than a profile, but it still has the distinctive lintel above the doorway. The doorposts are reinforced, it seems, at their base. In this way, the building resembles a tecpan (ruler's residence). [SW]
