This detail shows both human footprints (missing the usual toe marks) and horse hoof prints. Whereas human footprints were an indigenous tradition for showing trails and road, the presence of horse prints represents a post-contact innovation. Horses impressed the Mesoamericans, who drew and painted them in great detail. [SW]
