two Tlaxcalan lords walking

In this detail we see two more Tlaxcalan lords, both with colorful, elaborate capes and loincloths, each one of a different design and color, perhaps indicative of their rank. They both wear sandals, and they have their hair in the same style as the other lords who have accompanied Xicotencatl as he is greeting Cortés. These men gesture with their right hands, probably indicative of their voice and authority. [SW] [Note: Camila Townsend has suggested that they are talking with doña Marina, who is gesturing back. See her book, Malintzin’s Choices, 70.]
