indigenous women and men (servants)

This grouping represents the indigenous women and men who were required to provide service in the house of an official, making “bread” (pan, in Spanish) and gathering firewood and grasses for feeding to animals. The grinding stone, for making cornmeal for the tortillas, appears above the head of the woman in the upper left corner. In the lower left, associated with the men, we see grasses, that would have been cut and bundled to provide for the Spaniard’s horses, and firewood. [SW]
