tribute cloth (mantas)

Here we see sixteen rectangles that refer to thin, fine tribute cloths that had to be paid to the Spanish colonial overlord. The term used in Spanish is manta, but the term in Nahuatl might have been tilmatli. There is no indication of elaborate patterns or multiple colors with these cloths. [SW]
