seated indigenous lord, Yaqhiqhi

seated indigenous lord, Yaqhiqhi

This male figure is assumed to be the founder of a new Xochitepec dynasty, and is named ”Yaqhiqhi,” or “Lord 4 Movement.” If the conqueror is yaxix[…], then he cannot be identical with the first, new ruler of Xochitepec since they clearly have different names. In terms of the date of the conquest and the subsequent founding of the (new) dynasty of Xochitepec, Caso originally suggested a date some where around 1220 (Caso 1958: 464-465), whereas Cano Rodríguez preferred a broader, but earlier, time span, between 1042 and 1122 for the event (Rodríguez Cano 2015: 101-103) In a recent study, Nielsen and Helmke proposed the dates 1072 or 1250, based on the documented average reigns of Aztec (16, 5 years) and Maya (25, 4 years) rulers (Nielsen & Helmke 2016: 86). As we have seen elsewhere on the mapa, there are a number of formal iconographic features that suggest that the artist was trained according the visual conventions of the Aztecs. Thus, the row of seated lords are here shown wearing a Aztec-style xiuhhuitzolli diadem and are seated on woven reed thrones (icpalli). [Jesper Nielsen]
