Santiago (Tepalcatlalpan)

Santiago (Tepalcatlalpan)

This detail represents the heart of the community of Santiago, which we know from other sources to have the fuller, Nahua name of Santiago Tepalcatlalpan (still today). The degree of detail in this scene, showing two people kneeling in the atrium of the church, perhaps with a friar standing near them, is impressive. It is also, significantly, a very pro-Christian point of view. Note the way the buildings, including the church, appear to have red tile roofs, very Mediterranean. Many buildings have crosses on their roofs, too. The church tower vis-a-vis the entrance is the opposite of what we see ont the church today.
