litter

This is a litter (litera, in Spanish), which was a wheel-less type of transport borne by human carriers, with other humans inside the coach. This one was enclosed, to protect the persons being carried from the weather. The litter reflected social status, with the porters usually being indigenous and the persons carried, Spanish colonizers. [SW]
