Aztlan

This detail shows an island with a tree and a bird, plus people standing and a person lying in a boat. The gloss says: “Aztlan. A place of Megpies [i.e. magpies] where the Mexicans were called Aztlanechi [or Azteca].” The Aztecs are shown as elite males wearing cloaks tied at the shoulder. Note how the bird is chirping a lot (indicated by all the swirls, like speech scrolls, coming out of the beak). [SW]
