don Martín Cortés, indigenous lord of Quauhquechollan

This image represents a lord dressed in a red cloak, blue pants, a black Spanish hat, and enclosed black shoes. He may have a small beard. He is seated in a curule chair. He is identified by a gloss saying “don martyn cortes.” This lord is don Martín Cortés Xochitlahua, who ruled Quauhquechollan in the years 1545–1546, the time in which the events depicted in the Mapa Circular took place. A man of the same name also ruled in 1550. It is not unusual to find indigenous lords in Mexican codices with indications of their having embraced Spanish material culture. As we see here, the curule chair, hat, and shoes were symbols of prestige and accentuated the wearer’s own power within the colonial system. ---------- Este imágen representa a un señor vestido en manta roja y sombrero y zapatos españoles. Está sentado en una silla curul. Una glosa arriba de esta persona le identifica como 'don martyn cortes'. Se trata de don Martín Cortez Xochitlahua quién era señor de Quauhquechollan alrededor de los años 1545–1546, el tiempo de que se trata el asunto representado en el Mapa Circular. Un hombre del mismo nombre gobernaba en 1550, también. No es inusual encontrar en códices mexicanos que los señores indígenas se representaron con cualidades españolas (barba, ropa español, etc.) para acentuar su posición de poder en el nuevo sistema colonial. ----- Notes / Notas: According to don Esteban de Guzmán, this lord, Martín Xochitlahua, had created havoc in the organization of the calpolli, or subdivisions of the altepetl. Another reference we have to a don Martín, lord of Quauhquechollan, credits him with the construction of the monastery there. Finally, we see him again in a merced (grant) dated 1545. In that document, he is called “caçique y señor natural del pue[bl]o de guacachula” (AGN-T 2621, No. 164, f. 3r). --------- Una merced (concesión de tierra, de privilegios, o dinero) fechado 1545 dice que en aquella epóca un cierto don Martín Cortés Xochitlahua era “caçique y señor natural del pue[bl]o de guacachula” (AGN Tierras Vol. 2621, No. 164, f. 3r). El texto en la esquina izquierda superior del Mapa Circular de Quauhquechollan se fecha solamente un año más tarde que este merced, y menciona un señor Martín Xochitlahua a quién se refiera como siendo el señor de Quauhquechollan. Según el escritor de este texto, don Esteban de Guzmán, este señor Martín Xochitlahua había traído desorden en los calpolli del altepetl. Se puede concluir entonces que el don Martín Cortés representado en el Mapa Circular de Quauhquechollan y el don Martín Xochitlahua mencionado en el texto en la esquina izquierda superior del documento son una y la misma persona: el don Martín Cortés Xochitlahua mencionado en merced de 1545.
