boundary marker

boundary marker

This detail shows a mound with a cross on top, likely a boundary marker. On the right margin, we see the road to Mexico City passing nearby. The expression “cuezillo” may be a diminutive of “cuezo,” which was a wooden bowl in which masons kneaded mortar or plaster. The qualifier, “de tierra” (made of dirt) may mean that this mound of dirt, not far from the river, had been a place where building materials were prepared. [SW]
