road to Mexico City

road to Mexico City

This is a detail of the road to Mexico City. The footprints on it suggest that this map was made by an indigenous painter, for it was a pre-Columbian practice to indicate roads and pathways using footprints. What is interesting is the way the footprints go both east and west. This is different from our other, similar map of a similar stretch from Toluca to the wall, from about the same period, wherein the footprints all lead west. [SW]
