f. 11r., Nahuatl text

This Nahuatl text refers to the man standing in this scene as the great “land winner” (”tlalmaceuhqui”), which is a common term in the Techialoyan manuscripts for town founder or conqueror. He is said to have come to maintain himself and establish the altepetl of Ocoyacac upon orders from “our lord” Axayacatzin. Elsewhere in this manuscript, the name Axayacatl is shared by the colonial town founders and the notary, too. It is also the name of an Aztec emperor of the late fifteenth century who conquered the Valley of Toluca. [SW]
