f. 12r., three seated indigenous women

This scene on folio 12 recto show three elite indigenous women seated on the ground and gesturing. They are doña María Salome, doña Micaela, and doña Agustina Coxtoatzin. They wear cotton clothing of a style suggestive of the Spanish colonial era. Their names also indicate that they have been given recognition of their status with the Spanish noble title, doña, and their Christian given names indicate that they have been baptized. The possible indigenous surname “Coxtoatzin,” may refer to one or all three women. The term “ziupipilti” (cihuapipiltin) also indicates that they are noble women. The text adds that they provided tribute labor and they founded the town. [SW]
