Bk. IV, f. 1r., three palm trees
This is a detail of three trees, appearing in Book IV, folio 1 recto, all apparently of the same type, growing on and between two peaks. Their roots are visible, as was often the case in pre-Hispanic representations of trees. The trees are fairly tall and narrow, with clearly delineated branches or fronds evocative of palm trees. The fronds reach toward the sky rather than curving down toward the earth. Given the placename, we can be fairly certain that these are icçotl, a kind of palm tree. [SW]

Este es un detalle de tres árboles, aparentemente todos del mismo tipo, creciendo sobre y entre dos picos. Sus raíces son visibles, como es el caso en representaciones de árboles en tiempos pre-hispánicos. Los árboles son altos y angostos, con ramas claramente delineadas o hojas evocando algun tipo de palmera. Las hojas apuntan hacia el cielo en lugar de encorvarse hacia el suelo. Dado su topónimo, podemos asegurar que son icçotl, un árbol de la familia de las Palmas.
