This is a detail showing four birds around a tree. One of the birds in the scene perches on a leafless branch. The birds are drawn in two colors of ink, black and red. One wonders whether the birds in red ink were added at a later time, given the lack of red ink elsewhere in the manuscript. But the eyes and beaks of those two birds seem to be the same black ink as the other birds, and the stylistics are similar. So, maybe the red birds represent a different kind of bird. The text on this page, now missing, once referred to this place as “Tototlan,” which means land of birds.
